Join a Science Club - be mentored and have fun

You can make your first year at Cal even more fun by joining one or more of the science clubs related to your interests. You will enjoy both community and mentoring by students who understand your goals and challenges. Many of the clubs mix sports teams, ice cream socials with visits to research facilities, and field trips. Get advice for which courses, which professors, which experiences you do not want to miss as well as contacts for research and other special opportunities.

URAP - Undergraduate Research at UCB

The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) is designed to involve Berkeley undergraduates more deeply in the research life of the University. The Program provides opportunities for you to work with faculty on the cutting edge research projects for which Berkeley is world-renowned. Working closely with faculty, you will deepen your knowledge and skills in areas of special interest, while experiencing what it means to be part of an intellectual community engaged in research.

Student Learning Center for Tutoring and Study Sessions

Anticipate a challenging class? Check out the Student Learning Center before the semester starts so you know the time line to enroll in an adjunct class, set up tutoring or join a study group. Check with the department offering the class for a list of tutors. Did you know Econ offers special tutor sessions?

Use your Winter and Spring Breaks for Science

Enjoy a couple weeks in December with family and friends but January can offer the chance for field training, visiting research labs, joining a professional organization or attending a conference. Apply your Science - Attending the AGU Conference in SF in December

Attend the American Geoscientists Union (AGU) conference in San Francisco held during the first week of December. It offers over 300 presentations of research being done across the country related to the physical sciences. They offer a special student rate to attend which doubles after the November 1st regisration deadline.

Attending Fall Orientations for Potential STEM Majors

Now is an important time to consider program planning/updating for the coming year and beyond. You are encouraged to talk with the department undergraduate  advisors for potential majors  or as a declared major. Check the welcome guide for major orientations usually offered in early fall. It is an excellent opportunity to meet both students and faculty in your chosen field.

Mathematical Science Research Institute - Undergraduate Program MSRI-UP

The Mathematical Science Research Institute - Undergraduate Program (MSRI-UP) is a comprehensive summer program designed for undergraduate students who have completed two years of university-level mathematics courses and would like to conduct research in the mathematical sciences. Please note that due to funding restrictions, only U.S.

Department of Energy Internships

These student programs allow participants taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, two- or four- year college or university, graduate or professional school to be part of a cooperative-learning environment.

CalTeach Summer Research Institute

 

The Cal Teach Summer Research Institute is a nine-week program for math, science, and engineering undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in education, and is open to students from across the UC system who will have completed at least 60 units..
